Chapter Five

Allie sat down to her computer the next afternoon to review all the pictures she’d taken at the birthday celebration. Slowly going through each one, she noted the shots she especially liked. Ones that would never see the light of day she deleted instantly. Then she began to review again with a view to crop for the best effect. She paused on one of Jack where he was looking directly into the camera. His expression was solemn, his eyes dark and mysterious. She noted that as one she especially wanted to enlarge. There was one with Jack and George that she studied. Liking the contrast of the old soldier and the young, she planned to send that one to the paper. And make an enlarged copy for George.

Would Jack want one? Probably. She’d print up a bunch and maybe take them by his place later.

He hadn’t been in church that morning. She didn’t know if she was happy he hadn’t joined Michelle, or sad because he’d missed a really good sermon from Pastor John on the commandment about loving parents to live long upon the earth.

She’d been sitting with her parents, and gave thanks for them and the way they always were there for her. She knew they still saw her as their little girl, and added a short prayer to ask for wisdom to let them know she was an adult and fully responsible for herself.

Allie played music as she cropped, sized and printed picture after picture. While making a living at photography, she was always sharing candid shots with people. She loved their delight when they unexpectedly received some photographs. She didn’t believe it cut into her business at all and hoped it spread good will.

It was dinner time when she finished. She went to the kitchen, but saw nothing that appealed. Excited about seeing the pictures earlier, she’d skipped eating with her parents after church. Now she decided to see if her mom would let her come for supper. She gave her a quick call.

“Spaghetti, your favorite,” her mom said when Allie asked.

“Enough for me to join you?”

“Of course. I always prepare enough for leftovers as your dad loves them so. There’s plenty. We’re eating in about thirty minutes.”

“I’ll be there.”
